The Virginia Council on Indians office is unable to provide assistance with genealogical research. If you believe your ancestors were members of one of the state-recognized tribes listed under Virginia Tribes, you may contact that tribe directly for information. The suggestions below have been gathered from other sources.
Places to Contact
- Census Bureau in Suitland, MD; TEL: 301.457.2422. Records are open from 1790 through 1920 to the public.
- Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - Family History Center, 5600 Monument Ave., Richmond, VA; TEL: 804.288.8134. They have extensive microfilm on family names.
- Church records from the area in which you think family members may have attended.
- Cyndi's List Native American Resources - many diverse resources on American Indian genealogy.
- Daughters of American Revolution Library at 1776 D Street NW, Washington, DC; TEL: 202.628.1776. They have information broken down by States. In addition, the DAR has microfilm of the Census Records.
